In  recent years, with the introduction of precision molds and  high-efficiency molds (mold cycle is shorter and shorter), people's  requirements for mold making are getting higher and higher, due to the  copper electrode's own conditions, has become increasingly unable to  meet the mold industry Claim. Graphite as EDM electrode material, with its high machinability, light  weight, forming fast, very small expansion rate, loss is small, easy to  dress, etc., has been widely used in the mold industry, instead of  copper electrode has become inevitable.

First, the graphite electrode material properties

1.CNC processing speed, high cutting, easy to dress

Graphite  processing speed, for the copper electrode 3 to 5 times the finishing  speed is particularly prominent, and its high strength, for ultra-high  (50 ~ 90mm), ultra-thin (0.2 ~ 0.5mm) of the electrode, processing is  not easy Deformation. And  in many cases, the products need to have a good surface effect, which  requires the electrode as much as possible to make the overall public  electrode, and the overall public electrode production when there are  all kinds of hidden angle, due to the easy to trim the characteristics  of graphite , Making this problem easy to solve, and greatly reduce the number of electrodes, while the copper electrode can not do.

2. Fast EDM forming, thermal expansion is small, low loss

As the conductivity of graphite than copper is good, so it is faster than the copper discharge, copper 3 to 5 times. And its discharge can withstand a larger current, EDM rough processing more favorable. At the same time, the same volume, graphite weight of copper 1/5 times, greatly reduce the EDM load. As the strength of graphite at high temperatures but enhanced, can  effectively reduce the discharge loss (graphite loss of copper 1/4), to  ensure the processing quality.

3. Light weight, low cost

The  cost of making a set of molds, the CNC machining time of the  electrodes, the EDM time, and the electrode losses account for the bulk  of the overall cost, which are determined by the electrode material  itself. Graphite and copper compared to graphite machining speed and EDM speed are copper 3 to 5 times. At  the same time, the very small wear characteristics and the overall  production of graphite electrodes can reduce the number of electrodes,  also reduces the electrode consumables and machining time. All of which can greatly reduce the cost of making the mold.

Second, the graphite electrode electromechanical processing requirements and characteristics

1. Electrode production

Professional  graphite electrode production mainly use high-speed machine to process,  machine stability is better, three-axis movement to be uniform and  stable vibration, and like the spindle of these rotary accuracy should  be as good as possible. The machine can also be completed on the general processing of the  electrode, but the process of writing knife and copper electrode is  different.

2. EDM discharge processing

The graphite electrode is a carbon electrode. Because graphite conductivity is good, so in the discharge processing  can save a lot of time, which is one of the reasons for the use of  graphite electrode.

3. Processing characteristics of graphite electrodes

Industrial  graphite is hard and brittle, and abrasion of the tool is more severe  at C N C. It is generally recommended to use carbide or diamond-coated  tools. Graphite  in the roughing of the tool can be directly on the workpiece up and  down the knife, finishing to avoid the collapse angle, the occurrence of  fragmentation, often using light knife fast way to process. In  general, the graphite in the depth of less than 0.2mm in the case of  very little collapse, but also get better sidewall surface quality. Graphite  electrode CNC machining generated when the dust is relatively large,  may invade the machine tool guide screw and spindle, etc., which  requires the graphite processing machine has a corresponding device to  deal with graphite dust, machine sealing is also good, because the  graphite is toxic.
